{"id":103641,"date":"2025-09-02T10:48:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T10:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/?p=103641"},"modified":"2025-09-02T12:57:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T12:57:09","slug":"beware-of-phishing-emails-targeting-financial-aid-information-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/2025\/09\/beware-of-phishing-emails-targeting-financial-aid-information-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Beware of phishing emails targeting financial aid information"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Sept. 2, 2025<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some members of the º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½ community have recently received phishing emails attempting to steal sensitive personal information under the guise of financial aid or refund processing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These messages often include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Subject lines intended to convey urgency, such as: \u201cUrgent: Immediate Action Required \u2013 Complete Your Financial Aid Validation Form!\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Requests for login credentials, eCampus passwords, bank account logins, or birthdates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Links to fake forms, often hosted on Google Forms or other unofficial platforms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Important Reminder:<br><strong>º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½ Information Technology Services (ITS) and legitimate University partners, such as BankMobile&nbsp;will never&nbsp;ask you to submit sensitive information via Google Forms or unverified websites.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While <strong>BankMobile<\/strong> may send legitimate emails encouraging students to set up or update refund preferences, always double-check the sender address and link destination. If you&#8217;re unsure, don\u2019t click\u2014contact the <strong>ITS Service Desk<\/strong> or visit the official refund information page&nbsp;from º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to Report Phishing Emails<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you receive a phishing email:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Do not respond<\/strong>&nbsp;or provide any information.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Click the PhishAlarm button<\/strong>&nbsp;in your Gmail toolbar to report the email directly to IT Security Services.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/rhody.service-now.com\/sp?id=kb_article_view&amp;sysparm_article=KB0010277\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learn more about the PhishAlarm<\/a>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you clicked on the link and entered personal information:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Reset Your Password:<\/strong> Visit the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/its.uri.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ITS website<\/a>&nbsp;and join the Service Desk Zoom session.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reject Unrecognized DUO Requests:<\/strong> Do not approve any unexpected DUO authentication prompts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Additional Security Measures:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For all password resets and sensitive requests, º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½ requires identity verification using a photo ID in person or via video. Password changes cannot be completed via email for security reasons.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The IT Service Desk is open from 8 a.m.&nbsp;to 8 p.m.&nbsp;Monday through Thursday;&nbsp;8 a.m.&nbsp;to 5 p.m.&nbsp;on Friday;&nbsp;and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.&nbsp;on weekends.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Stay vigilant, and if you have any questions, please&nbsp;get in touch with&nbsp;the <a href=\"https:\/\/its.uri.edu\/it-organization\/it-service-desk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IT Service Desk<\/a>.
